Kingdom Hearts 3 release date chatter has grown louder since we learned the game is slated to release in 2018. In fact, the release window also reignited an old fan theory sparked by the game’s E3 2015 trailer. Kingdom Hearts fan Cynical recently recapped his thoughts in a video, and they’re interesting to say the least.

As seen in the screencap below, there’s a shot in the trailer featuring a monthly calendar on the wall behind the head of young Eraqus. The first, second and third dates of the month are shown running from Thursday through Saturday, and the final date of the month is Saturday, on the 31st.

Does this calendar from the E3 2015 trailer suggest a March 2018 release for Kingdom Hearts 3?

Back in 2015 when the first trailer made its debut, fans discovered the setup of the calendar matched the month of Dec. 2016. As such, diehard followers determined that similarity was a possible hint towards the game’s release date. That obviously turned out to be false in the end, but, now that we know the supposed 2018 release year, this theory has been given a second look.

Just as the calendar setup happened to match Dec. 2016, the same also appears to be true for March 2018 as well. Sure the calendar has failed us in the past, but it’s worth noting that March definitely has some history with the Kingdom Hearts franchise. Kingdom Hearts 2 released in March 2006 in North America, and the original Kingdom Hearts made its way to Japan in March of 2002. In fact, even the 1.5+2.5 collection released during March of this year as well.

So is it possible Square Enix knew the release date of Kingdom Hearts 3 several years before it was made public? While it’s certainly cool to think about even if this theory proves correct by sheer coincidence, it’s also probably not true.

There are simply too many signs of Kingdom Hearts 3 “delays” to prove that level of foresight doesn’t make sense. In recent interviews , game director Tetsuya Nomura acknowledged that development has been slower than expected. Kingdom Hearts 3 details were promised for last winter, and there weren’t any to be had. In order for Square Enix to know a release date multiple years in advance, the team would seriously have to have its act together and meet every single deadline for many months straight. For all intents and purposes, that has never seemed to be the case when it comes to Kingdom Hearts 3 or anything Nomura’s name is attached to.

With both the positives and negatives in mind, what are we to make of this calendar? While it’s possible it could have been a hint toward something in 2015, it seems pretty doubtful that it’d mean anything today. Nomura does have a history of toying with his fans, but sometimes a calendar really is just a calendar.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is slated to release on PS4 and Xbox One in 2018.

What do you think of this calendar theory? Could Square Enix truly know the Kingdom Hearts 3 release month that far in advance? Tell us in the comments section!
