As a result of the growing COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, many industries including the video game industry have taken a hit. Many video game development companies have shifted to the work-from-home model and as a result, the feared delay in work has begun.
Just a few days ago, Microsoft announced that both Wasteland 3 and Minecraft Dungeons have been delayed. Today, Sony also announced the unfortunate news that The Last of Us Part II and Iron-Man VR have been delayed because of COVID-19 until "further notice."
Both Sony and Naughty Dog issued their statements on the delay with Sony stating that the company had to take the difficult decision of delaying the TLoU Part II and Iron Man VR due to the global coronavirus crisis. Naughty Dog's statement, on the other hand, included their own version of the statement on the delay, which said that the development of TLoU Part II is almost complete and the team is fixing the final bugs in the game. The developer even went further to add that even if they manage to finish the game on time, the release will be halted due to logistical reasons.
The COVID-19 impact is clear as day on the video games industry and TLoU 2 won't be the only game impacted by this. However, there are several other games that have been released despite the ongoing pandemic. Popular games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Doom Eternal, and Resident Evil 3: Remake are being greatly enjoyed by fans. At the same time, developers are also looking to not disrupt their game releases as is the case with Final Fantasy VII Remake, which has been out in many countries a week earlier than the game's official release.
What this means is that while the ongoing global crisis is here, our usual means of entertainment like video games, movies and TV shows will see a major delay. Nonetheless, we'll keep you posted as soon as we learn something on The Last of Us Part II and Iron Man VR.
