If you weren’t a fan of the translator on Faker’s first Twitch stream, you weren’t the only one. SK Telecom head coach, Choi “L.i.E.S” Byung-hoon, said on Wolf’s stream Tuesday that the team will no longer use translators or be streamed on different platforms.
According to translation by Slingshot Esports, Choi said “there will be no simultaneous translator as well, the manner in which they executed the translation was slightly different from what we agreed, which led to some problems. But the translators will not be present, and the players will be learning English to their best ability, so please don’t worry about that.”
On Monday, League of Legends team SK Telecom started to stream on Twitch. 240,000 watched mid laner Faker stream, breaking all previous records on the streaming platform. Fans were upset with Kongdoo, the company assigned to help the team with the broadcast.
Faker couldn’t see his chat and was fed information by his translator, who became a nuisance to hear. Her breathing could be heard in the mic, which was distracting and the mid-lane god looked lost without any direct communication with the hundreds of thousands of people watching. They felt the translator was “ruining” Faker’s stream by, according to one fan on reddit, “treating him like a monkey in the cage or a lion in the circus.”
Wolf went on to say that fans shouldn’t blame Kongdoo for what happened. “There were some misunderstandings about what was going to happen for both parties, and even though many are saying that (Faker) is the one who was most negatively affected, that’s the same for the whole team, and the SKT front desk,” Wolf said. “Please stop the overly harsh criticism for both the team and Kongdoo.”
