Remasters of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2 were teased during the San Diego Comic-Con 2024 event that showed off branding materials. Steam, Crystal Dynamics

San Diego Comic-Con 2024 is underway and supposedly included a tease for remasters of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2.

The reveal was made by an eagle-eyed fan who was attending the event and saw what seemed to be branding for the unannounced remasters. User Mama Robotnik posted pictures of statues based on the franchise.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Remasters

One box seemingly showed the branding, "Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver I & II Remastered" despite no official confirmation by developer Crystal Dynamics. The first game was originally released in 1999 and was available for both PC and PlayStation 1.

On the other hand, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 was launched in 2001 for both PC and PlayStation 2. Both of these titles were part of the dark fantasy action RPG franchise, which has remained mostly quiet for decades now, according to IGN.

The last entry in the series, Legacy of Kain: Defiance, was originally released in 2003 and was available for PlayStation 2, PC, and the original Xbox. While the franchise has been neglected for years, there was hope that it would make a comeback in October 2022.

A Tease at San Diego Comic-Con 2024

This was when the developer published a survey that asked fans if they would like to see a new game from the Legacy of Kain series.

A few months after the release of the survey, the owner of Crystal Dynamics, Embracer Group, revealed that it received 100,000 responses, which hinted that a new game could be in development.

The original director of the two Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver games was Amy Hennig, who later worked at Naughty Dog, Electronic Arts, and Skydance Interactive.

In a 2022 earnings report, Embracer Group said that it saw "great potential, not only in sequels but also in remakes, spinoffs, as well as transmedia projects" based on the Legacy of Kain franchise, said Polygon.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, the booth that showed off the branding for remasters of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2 was Dark Horse Comics.

Vice President of Product Development and Sales Randy Lahrman said that the status will come out in August and that more information will be released later on.

However, the company did not respond to questions regarding the sign that referenced the remasters and it was removed afterwards.

Developer Crystal Dynamics also confirmed last year that it was conducting a closed playtest but did not say which game it was for, according to GameSpot.
