A lot is happening in the Legends of Tomorrow season finale. The Legends are celebrating a victory over the Time Masters, but Vandal Savage is still out there with Carter and Kendra captive. Now that Rip Hunter knows the future is not predetermined and the Time Masters were orchestrating their mission, the team is going to have to change up their strategy.
“They're kind of screwed at the beginning of episode 16. Things look pretty darn hopeless. A good segment of the team is going to want to give up,” writer/producer Marc Guggenheim tells IGN.
Expect a lot of setting up for Season 2, where countless new characters will be introduced. We’ll get a taste of the story arc to come upon meeting a new mystery character, Patrick J. Adams. We have no idea which DC character he’ll be bringing to live-action, but his presence could be related to a tease revealed in the Legends of Tomorrow finale trailer: Sgt. Rock’s helmet.
With so many characters, Legends has way too much ground to cover in 42 minutes. So here’s 10 moments you should be ready for:
1. Final battle with Vandal Savage
The Legends Season finale is the culmination of the Vandal Savage story arc, as he won’t be continuing on into Season 2. This also means to expect the Carter / Kendra drama will come to a close. Vandal Savage no longer has the protection of the time masters, how will he deal?
“I'll say the end of the Savage/Kendra/Carter story is pretty definitive." -- Marc Guggenheim, Comic Book Resources
2. White Canary wants to save Laurel
Don’t piss off Sara Lance. As it turns out, Rip knew the Black Canary’s tragic fate yet didn’t tell Sara. In a short teaser video, the White Canary slams Rip Hunter against a wall and demands they travel back to Star City and save Laurel. As Rip’s #2 confidante, Sara’s anger toward him may hamper the Legends team vibe.
3. Never-before-seen powers
“A couple of people are going to display some new powers, and as we’ve sort of intimated, the epic fight against Savage is wholly unique.” -- Marc Guggenheim, TV Line
With a host of new characters joining Legend s in Season 2, not to mention the time-travel element, it comes as no surprise tonight's episode is going to be full of incomprehensible action.
4. Meet Patrick J. Adams’ mystery character
Adams (Suits) is set to portray a “beloved superhero from the DC Canon.” As previously reported , his agenda serves as “a launching point for Season 2.” Guggenheim has debunked speculation that Adams is playing Alan Scott, aka the Green Lantern. With Booster Gold ruled out as well, the rumor mill is silent on this one. Could he have something to do with the Sgt. Rock tease?
5. Mick gets emotional
Mick and the Legends believe Snart to be dead, but then a report came out confirming his character is up for grabs across the entire Arrowverse -- Legends, Flash, Arrow and now Supergirl. Last episode was the first time Mick showed us his sensitive side, but now that his sidekick Captain Cold is gone, will he go back to being his old brute self?
“Yeah, Mick struggles with having feelings, particularly when those feelings are one of loyalty or sympathy. You'll see a deeper exploration of that in the season finale,”-- Marc Guggenheim, IGN
6. Waverider does a lot of time-traveling
With no direction, no map, and no idea how their actions will affect the future, the Legends will be facing up against the most powerful enemy of all: time.
“I would say, one of the most unique sequences that you’ve seen on a time travel show — because it’s not only epic but it is taking place literally across history.” -- Marc Guggenheim, TV Line
“We're going to be exploring a lot of our ‘greatest hits’ over the course of the episode.” -- Marc Guggenheim, IGN
7. Aftermath of the Oculus
How will the destruction of the Oculus affect time? The Time Master’s dirty little secret: everything the Legends have done so far has been orchestrated. The Time Masters wanted Vandal Savage to destroy the world all along, even though he’s murdered thousands. The destruction of the Oculus means there is no more destiny. With no future to guide them, they may have to wing it.
8. Sgt. Rock?
Vandal Savage is back in WWII looking to find magical artifacts in Nazi possession. Hawkgirl runs into a young soldier who’s wearing a helmet all too similar to Sgt. Rock’s helmet, which traditionally has three bullet holes. We’ve seen this helmet aboard the Wave Rider, and DC’s Instagram even singled out Sgt. Rock’s helmet in a February Instagram post with #LoTeastereggs in the caption. Looks like we’re going to be meeting another character who’s not Patrick J. Adams in the finale too, or, he has something to do with this tease.
9. Snart Is Alive
“I would also say that he’s not off the show. You’ll still see him next season. In fact, check out the season finale.” -- Marc Guggenheim, TV Line
How did Captain Cold survive the Oculus explosion?
10. More about Thanagarians
The Time Masters said they wanted Vandal Savage to wreak havoc because his leadership would unite the world before an impending Thanagarian invasion in 2175. Without Savage’s absolute rule, the time masters predicted Earth would be destroyed. Who exactly are the Thanagarians, and why do they want to destroy the world?
