Summer 2016 is the expected release window for Marco Polo Season 2. Netflix revealed this date range when Marco Polo: One Hundred Eyes special became available to stream Dec. 26. However, recent rumors suggest a more specific release date. New episodes may be available to stream by May or June.
“They are still shooting season 2 in Malaysia,” said Reddit user filmphotoguy, who cites “some of the crew” as his source. “It takes 6-8 months to film and a few months to finish editing. I believe they are probably more than halfway done shooting.”
This was posted 1 month ago. If it takes 6-8 months to film and the crew is halfway done shooting that leaves 4 more months of camera work. Tack on 2 months for editing, and we are six months out. The math slates Marco Polo season 2 for May or June release. “I wouldn’t expect to see anything until at least end of winter or early spring,” he adds.
The Netflix insider, who says he is part of the crew working on Netflix’s Original Series Bloodline, reveals a few more details about why season 2 is taking so long to shoot. “Marco Polo is an epic show that involves going to remote locations around Malaysia and rounding up literally an army of extras.”
Season 1 of Marco Polo premiered Dec. 2014 and was renewed for a second season Jan. 2015. If these rumors prove to be true, season 2 will come a year and a half after its original debut. After receiving some negative press, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings assured the Huffington Post its Original Series is “a massive success” and “super popular with the audience.” Marco Polo season 1 may have been outshined by shows like House of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, and of course its main competitor Game of Thrones.
Netflix has Marco Polo season 2 on the calendar for 2016 release, but has not yet confirmed a specific month or date. Netflix may have released the One Hundred Eyes special to keep viewers interested in the meantime. Season 2 could have been put on hold purposely in an effort to potentially gain stronger viewership across the globe. Hastings announced this month at CES that Netflix is now available in more than 130 new countries around the world with a focus on promoting original content.
