The development team behind the highly popular 6v6 hero shooter "Marvel Rivals" issued an apology to players after mistakenly banning innocent people for allegedly cheating in the game.
NetEase Games posted on Discord, admitting that it unfairly flagged many cheaters in the game who were simply playing in compatibility layer programs. The situation resulted in false bans, but the developer did not specify exactly how many people were affected.
Marvel Rivals' False Bans
In the post, the studio tried to reassure "Marvel Rivals" players that they were not banning players who were playing fairly and not using any cheats. NetEase Games added that it made a list of all the affected players and lifted their bans to allow them to play again.
They noted that they identified the specific reasons behind the false bans that went out and wanted to express their heartfelt apologies for the inconveniences that the situation has caused. The team also said that it was investing in improving its anti-cheat system, according to IGN.
The developer called on players to report any cheaters that they come across while playing "Marvel Rivals." NetEase Games said that its mission was to provide people with a fair, just, and enjoyable gaming environment.
This meant that preventing and identifying cheaters was one of their top priorities. The studio added it has invested significant manpower and resources to improve the speed and accuracy of its detection system.
Improving the Anti-Cheat System
The false bans were a result of players using compatibility layers in order to play "Marvel Rivals" on other platforms, such as Linux and macOS. This is primarily because the game was only released for Windows on PC, Gaming On Linux said.
The compatibility layers that people used for this were Proton and Wine, which were then flagged by NetEase Games' system as being cheat software.
The studio noted that players who believe they were wrongly banned can contact customer support to have their situation investigated.
Despite the odd situation that "Marvel Rivals" was put in following the false bans, some players who used compatibility layers were not flagged as cheating.
Many fans are now hoping that the system will get better and no longer ban players who were not actually playing unfairly, according to PCGamer.
The situation also comes as the game's Season 1 is fast approaching, which will bring with it the Fantastic Four as new playable heroes. The family was first teased with an image that showed off their design.
