Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix’s next big game is still a few months out, but there is already a palpable hype surrounding the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers. For one, this is Marvel’s first major AAA game involving its most prominent supergroup (if you discount the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series), which puts it under a ton of pressure. With the mainline Avengers movies now at an end, it may be up to this title to pick up the slack and start the company’s next big era in the video game industry.
As this brand-new story is set in a universe different from the MCU, Marvel’s Avengers is expected to carry a huge cast of characters, from allies to foes and everyone in between. Besides the OG cast including Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, and Black Widow, players will also get to play as Kamala Khan, who takes up the mantle of Ms. Marvel. Thanks to a leak from an innocuous LEGO set, however, we now know of other heroes joining in, including Black Panther, War Machine, Captain Marvel and Hawkeye. Check out the corresponding tweet below.
Besides these new heroes, the LEGO sets also revealed two villains which we should expect to see in Marvel’s Avengers. The first is fan-favorite and occasional antihero Loki, who is donning a look that coincides more with his comic book counterpart rather than the movie one. The second villain is relatively less popular, but still rather familiar to those who avidly read the comics: M.O.D.O.K. The acronym stands for Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing, and he reached popularity as a recurring villain for the Avengers and his frequent clashes with both Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Carol Danvers (then known as Ms. Marvel).
M.O.D.O.K. tends to be on the wackier side in terms of his design, but he is still notable for his superhuman intelligence that almost borders on precognition. He also has psionic powers, while the giant humanoid floating robot body he uses is equipped with various weapons. It will be interesting to see how the developers will modify his design for Marvel’s Avengers, and what role he will play in the heroes’ supposed downfall.
Marvel’s Avengers is set to be released for the PS4, Xbox One, PC and Stadia on September 4, 2020.
