Fall is quickly approaching and broadcast networks are holding pilot screenings to get final feedback before schedules are set. Deadline has the scoop on all the industry chatter. While there are a lot of shows generating positive buzz, there are three shows in particular that caught my eye: ABC’s Marvel’s Most Wanted, NBC’s Powerless, and The CW’s Riverdale.
Marvel’s Most Wanted
ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff “still looks like a no-brainer.”
There’s no word on when the project will come to fruition, though hopefully soon seeing Mockingbird and Lance Hunter, two fan-favorites, have been X’ed out of S.H.I.E.L.D. for good. After a confrontation with Russian Government, Bobbi (aka Mockingbird) and Hunter were forced to disavow relations with S.H.I.E.L.D. to protect themselves and their comrades.
Most Wanted will pick up the storyline as ex-spies (and ex-lovers) on the run with countless enemies gunning for their heads. They will gain an ally in Dominic Fortune (Delroy Lindo), who will give them assignments in return for his protection, as they travel the world. Spoiler TV reports Oded Fehr and Fernanda Andrade have roles in the pilot episode, alongside Mockingbird (Adrianne Palicki) and Nick Blood (Lance Hunter).
Riverdale
On The CW’s Archie Comics adaptation --“Greg Berlanti continues to march toward a fourth comic-based series on the CW with Riverdale flying high.”
Teenagers Veronica, Betty, Jughead, and Archie’s enemy Reggie will star along with other characters from the expansive Archie Comics library. The TV show will focus on Archie Andrews navigating a love triangle between socialite Veronica Lodge and “girl next door” Betty Cooper.
“The live-action series offers a bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring small-town life and the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade,” the Archie Comics website states.
CW president Mark Pedowitz revealed the plot has a darker twist during a Television Critics Association's winter press tour. "The darker take was when you have Roberto and Greg and they want to take a run at something, you give them that leeway. They deserve it. They’ve earned it. That’s why we went with a darker take,” he said.
Powerless
What’s it like to be an ordinary person in a world full of supers? NBC’s 30-minute, single camera anti-superhero series continues to get buzz. “In comedy, several early standouts...the DC workplace comedy Powerless.”
Previous chatter revealed the show has the same vibe as comedies like The Office and Community. Instead of a Dunder Mifflin paper company or Greendale Community College, Powerless takes place at RetCon Insurance. DC Comics' Crimson Fox was spotted on set, and Vanessa Hudgens will reportedly star as Emily Locke, a claims adjuster who loves helping people. She's not happy with the destruction superheroes cause in Charm City.
ABC’s rumored comedy series Damage Control was not included. The plot follows Marvel’s clean up crew and how they handle the collateral damage left behind by the city’s heroes. Official release dates for Marvel's Most Wanted, Powerless, and Riverdale havne't been announced.
