Publisher SNK and developer TiMi Studios (who is under tech giant Tencent Games) have just revealed Metal Slug Code: J, the code name for the yet-to-be officially announced installment in the classic 2D run-and-gun arcade franchise. The game is set to release for mobile devices.
The announcement trailer, which runs for just under a minute and 30 seconds, showcases snippets of the title’s gameplay. So far, it does not look like Code: J will be an all-new addition to the Metal Slug franchise, but instead, a vast reimagining of Metal Slug 3. I’m assuming this because of the appearance of that annoying crab-like tank, although it has made guest appearances in other Metal Slug games as well. The other notable thing about the announcement trailer is the game’s noticeable shift from its 3D form to a 2.5D aesthetic, showcasing depth which is especially important for stages where in you have to decide whether to take the higher or lower ground. Honestly, it looks very well done. The implementation of the 2.5D graphics is effective and doesn’t take away from the franchise’s original visuals.
Lastly, there are also parts in the trailer where the player is able to control Marco in a 3D space. So far, the areas where the player character is able to move in 3D looks like just special hubs that are accessible in between levels. If the developers managed to create a level from a third-person POV, it surely is going to be exciting to try out.
In a press release, SNK game producer Yasuyuki Oda said that “Metal Slug has such an amazing history of great action and gameplay so we’re proud to bring this to mobile gamers around the world.” He added, “We’re happy to work closely with such a strong developer as TiMi Studios on this latest Metal Slug title.”
TiMi J1 Studio general manager Winco Qin has also said that “Metal Slug is one of the great arcade franchises and a perfect fit for mobile play. Our team has been focused on a faithful recreation of the game’s classic shoot ’em up style, easily accessible for players that’s fun for new and existing fans of the genre.”
Metal Slug Code: J is set to release for iOS and Android devices.
