It’s been a long time since Retro Studios released a game. Specifically, it’s been almost two years, since the studio brought Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze to Wii U. Since then, the company has been working on a secret project. We don’t know what it is. But I bet you can guess. Retro just unveiled its revamped website after a long period of being essentially invisible. Does that mean the revelation of their project—perhaps Metroid NX—is at hand?
Retro Modernizes… Does It Presage Metroid Prime NX?
First off, check out the new Retro site (Nintendolife spotted it first). It’s not too flashy in itself; it’s about what you’d expect from an in-house game developer that’s wholly owned by a major publisher. It’s a lineup of the games the company has made, its culture and that sort of thing. Nothing special, not even on the careers page. It’s not juicy, and it’s not really for consumers.
But it still may tell us something. Why did Retro unveil a new website now, and not last year or the year before or a year from now? Spoiler alert: The Nintendo NX is being announced this year, and probably coming out this year too. Whatever game Retro is working on may well be a launch title for the new console. That’s a good time to get your website updated, right?
And remember… that title that Retro is working on is probably Metroid Prime. After all, we know that Nintendo wants to make a new 3D Metroid. And Shigeru Miyamoto wants Retro in particular to make it. Add one and one, and you have a pretty likely outcome right there. By the time the Nintendo NX comes out, assuming it does end up releasing this holiday season, Retro will have had two and a half years to work on whatever it’s working on. That sounds just about right—even if Metroid NX or whatever it is won’t be a day one release, it could still easily hit the launch window. And that would be pretty exciting news for all of us.
Call it a lot to predict based on the relaunch of a website, and maybe it is. Or maybe it’s just a data point, one piece of evidence that adds to the rumors. Or it could mean that Retro’s hibernation is almost over.
