Microsoft doesn’t exactly have a number of major single-player games under its belt, especially recently. That is going to change very soon (or in a couple of years at least). When Microsoft bought Bethesda Games along with all its IPs, some fans were worried that they might start adopting the ‘games-as-a-service’ model. Thankfully, that won’t be the case.
Phil Spencer, Microsoft's Head of Xbox, recently said in an interview with Gamereactor that Xbox Games Studios will focus more on single-player games. As Microsoft mentioned previously, all its first-party games will be available on Xbox Game Pass on Day One. The company wants players to enjoy different kinds of games via Game Pass, not just one genre.
“I know some people that, when they've looked at the model around Game Pass, have assumed that Game Pass is actually a better model, if there's more Games-as-a-Service games in the subscription," Spencer said in the interview. "I actually argue the opposite and believe the opposite. The last thing I want in Game Pass is that there's one game that everybody is playing forever, that's not a gaming content subscription, that's a one-game subscription, that's WoW, right?”
Spencer further elaborated on this answer in the interview. “So for us, having games in the subscription that have a beginning, middle, and end, and then they go on to play the next game, maybe those are single-player narrative-driven games, I just finished Tell Me Why, an amazing game from DontNod, those games can be really strong for us in the subscription,” he said.
That is very good news, as ‘only multiplayer’ games aren’t exactly well-liked in the gaming community (there are few exceptions, of course.)
The majority of Bethesda games are known to have full-fledged single-player campaigns like Fallout, Skyrim, Doom, Wolfenstein, and more. So it’s nice to know that the trend will continue. I, for one, am waiting for The Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield, whenever those will be released.
