In a recent interview with GameReactor, Xbox Head Phil Spencer shared interesting details on game exclusivity on the Xbox. During the interview, Spencer stated that all games launching on the Xbox will also launch on PC and can be purchased from Steam.
"If we are shipping a first-party game it's coming to PC. If we are shipping a first-party game on PC it's coming to Steam and our own store," Spencer said to GameReactor. "That's my goal, and then there will be ... maybe little anomalies every so often and because of relationships and certain developers that want to do certain things, but my goal is: make games as playable by as many people as possible so that this art form continues to grow."
When discussing game exclusivity, Spencer was clear that although short-term game exclusivity can draw more audiences, Xbox has a different vision for gaming in the long-term. "But if we take a higher-level view, is gaming better if more people get to play more of the great games in our ecosystem? I think that is true. And that is why we ship our game on Xbox, we ship our game on PC, and if you have an Android phone you can play our games too," Spencer said.
With Microsoft acquiring ZeniMax Studios, the parent company for Bethesda Games, fans were wondering whether or not Xbox will start to have high-profile exclusives just as Sony does. It's interesting to see that Spencer has no such ideas and is instead focused on the player-centric approach.
Moreover, Steam is almost every PC gamer's digital storefront for games, and it's good for Xbox to understand this.
Xbox Series X/S is releasing on November 10.
