The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are making their Minecraft debut this week, days after the franchise returned to to theaters for the first time in a decade, courtesy of a brand new skin pack inspired by the old TV show. And the best part, for those who share my disdain of the new film’s suits and origin stories, is that the new Mighty Morphin Power Rangers pack is based on the costumes and characters popularized back in the ‘90s.
Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that Mojang decided to honor the original incarnation of the team rather than the recent reboot, given the affection expressed by artist Mike Fielder, one of several creatives to contribute to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers pack. Like many kids born in the ‘80s and ‘90s, MMPR played a major role in his after-school entertainment. Naturally, he’d want to immortalize the Power Rangers and supporting characters as he remembers them.
“As a teen I remember getting out of school, grabbing a snack and settling into the cartoon line-up," says Fielder. "Part of that routine was watching Power Rangers . When I found out we would be working on a Minecraft version of some of the character line-up I was pretty excited and even more so when I found out Bulk and Skull would be included since they were my favourite characters.”
According to Mojang, a plethora of recognizable figures from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television series will be featured in the new Minecraft add-on. All six members of the original team are represented, albeit in suited form, although it looks like Mojang prefers Tommy Oliver’s stint as the Green Ranger over his time in the White suit. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers pack also includes Lord Zedd, the classic Rita Repulsa costume and the original Goldar -- not the weird, melted metal version from the new movie. It even includes the Megazord.
Minecraft is currently available on PC, PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U and Nintendo Switch, along with a variety of handheld and “smart” devices. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers pack is available to Console Edition , Pocket and Windows 10 Edition players.
