Minecraft Wii U finally came out last fall after years of clamoring, and the game has been a big success—despite calls that it was “too late.” This spring, the game got two other boosts—the announcement of the upcoming physical edition and the release of the Super Mario-themed skins for the game. And, according to The Verge, the Mario skins weren’t even Nintendo’s idea.

Minecraft Wii U Super Mario Skins: Mojang Knows What You Need

As soon as Minecraft Wii U was announced, the chatter about exclusive content began. Now, five months later, it’s finally here. The Super Mario skins launched earlier in May and are free for all present and future owners of Minecraft Wii U; the skins will also come included with the physical retail pack of the game. Hopefully, they can also be easily ported over to the inevitable Nintendo NX version of Minecraft as well.

As Nintendolife and The Verge reported, the idea for the Super Mario skins actually didn’t come from Nintendo. Mojang and port developer 4J Studios apparently approached Nintendo with the idea for the texture pack—one of the more substantial makeovers for Minecraft. Nintendo made it happened and allowed the licensing to go through, but the whole idea came from Mojang. And it’s not that surprising—Minecraft deeply reflects its love of the gaming medium, so it’s only natural that the team had some fondness for Nintendo.

The Super Mario skin pack has basically already become the best reason to get Minecraft Wii U, if you already have another system. It’s not just character skins; it’s a full texture pack, and reskins monsters, blocks and the environment as well. As a result, you can build your own little Mushroom Kingdom, complete with Shy Guys and Toads and even Luigi. Even if it doesn’t become your primary Minecraft world, that’s a lot of fun to dabble with. Peach’s Castle, anyone?
