This week saw the first release of information about one of the most anticipated modes in recent MLB The Show history. Retro Mode was featured in a brief snippet during the initial trailer for MLB The Show 17, but there was not much to go on in that clip.
According to the first developers blog from The Show's Community Specialist and Game Designer Ramone Russell, Retro Mode will be immensely different from regular gameplay in MLB The Show 17. Instead of all the buttons and different attributes that go into The Show, Sony took a simplified approach to Retro Mode by making it a one button mode. For all the metrics that can be used in this game, pitching, for example, is boiled down to three areas: velocity, break and control.
Every pitcher has three pitches to work with and you throw those pitches by hitting one button. Here is how the pitches will move according to Russell:
“To throw a fastball you hold down on the left analog stick and press X. To throw a changeup you hold up on the left analog stick and press X. And to throw a slider you press to the left or right on the left analog stick after the pitch is released.”
Velocity will be controlled by holding up or down before the pitch is released by the pitcher. After the pitch thrown, that is when the movement of the pitch can be manipulated with the analog controls. For most players, Retro Mode is there to mix things up when your Road To The Show or Season modes begin to wear on your patience. But also, Retro Mode will introduce the old school baseball games feel to players that are new to The Show franchise.
In other news, Sony announced the schedule for the remainder of their Developers Blog and Twitch live streams for MLB The Show 17. The blogs are important because of the amount of information that is shared concerning the different modes and features included in the game from year to year. The live streams offers the ability for fans to see the game being played with play-by-play coming from The Show developers explaining what they are seeing. For MLB The Show fans, this is the time of year that they look forward to, almost as much as the actually release of the game. Below is the schedule of blogs and live streams for the next few weeks.
