In a message to Gillian Anderson on social media, David Duchovny suggested more episodes of The X-Files could be coming sooner than we thought.
On Tuesday, Duchovny took to Twitter to wish his former co-star a happy birthday, and did so in a way that stoked fan hopes that another limited-run X-Files series could be in the works. Check out his message, below:
The wording of Duchovny’s message may be more significant than it seems at first glance, and likely goes beyond the obvious reference to the characters of Dana Scully and Fox Mulder.
At the Television Critics Association’s Summer Press Tour on Monday, Fox Entertainment president David Madden said, “We would love to do other seasons [of The X-Files],” adding that execs were in “significant talks” with series creator Chris Carter as well as Duchovny and Anderson. “We are working hard, and would like to get a new season soon,” Madden said. Fox TV Group chairman Dana Walden also lent her support to continuing the X-Files reboot, explaining, “I don’t see a full season of episodes, but I’d be happy to get 10 or 8 episodes.”
Given the network’s evident support of keeping The X-Files reboot going, it’s likely that Duchovny’s tweet references the network and its chairman, while also bringing to mind Mulder and Scully.
The six-episode revival of The X-Files on Fox earlier this year brought in solid ratings despite a lukewarm critical reception.
