NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment released a TV spot for Mortal Kombat 11 confirming that Kitana will be part of the roster as a playable character.
So far the characters that have been confirmed prior to Kitana are Scorpion, Raiden, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Skarlet, Baraka, Geras, Kano, D'Vorah, Kabal, Jade, Johnny Cage, Cassie Cage, Erron Black, Jacqui Briggs, Kotal Kahn, Noob Saibot, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Jax Briggs, Cetrion, and The Kollector. Shao Kahn is available as well, but as a pre-order exclusive.
In the story, Kitana is Edenia's 10,000-year-old princess. She grew up thinking she was the biological daughter of Shao Kahn and became one of his deadliest fighters. However, upon learning the truth, she rose up against Shao Kahn, particularly in his quest to rule Earthrealm. She later died in battle, but was resurrected as an evil revenant version of her former self. Right now, Kitana is in the Netherrealm and serves as its ruler alongside Liu Kang's revenant version. Her current self is now bent on destroying all of the realms.
In the TV spot, the concept being presented is that each individual has a fighter inside them that pushes them to fight for what they believe in. In essence, it is a world where everyday people have within them the power and strength of the game’s characters. To make this concept possible, Warner Brothers brought in Create Advertising Group, Director Joe Sill and Plastic Wax. In order to push the concept even further, Plastic Wax made use of visual effects in order to display Sub-Zero’s ice manipulation, Raiden’s lightning power and of course, Kitana’s steel fan weapons. As seen on the TV spot, one person walks and every time the person passes through a shadow, a different person comes out on the other side.
For those who want to learn more about Kitana, players and fans can tune in to the Kombat Kast livestream this week for an in-depth Kitana gameplay walkthrough.
Mortal Kombat 11 is set for release April 23. The game is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
