Ahead of Mr. Robot Season 2’s July premiere, USA Network has released an exclusive behind-the-scenes teaser to The Hollywood Reporter. While the video is mostly recycled footage from the past trailer, it does feature showrunner Sam Esmail and stars Rami Malek (Elliot Alderson) and Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) briefly speaking about what’s to come in Season 2.

‘When Season 2 picks up it’s 30 days after Five/Nine, but that’s what people are calling it as sort of a reference to the attack on Evil Corp,” Esmail said.

Elliot’s hack, dubbed Five/Nine, sent the economy spiraling. It’s all over the news (as yesterday’s newscast teaser shows), and Tyrell Wellick is the public face behind the madness. However, the aftermath of Five/Nine may not be Elliot’s top priority.

“Now that Elliot knows who Mr. Robot is, its very different from last year. What he’s trying to do at all costs is to remove him from his world,” Malek said. “Season 2 will go to some really dark places. We delve into several of the nooks and crannies of Elliot’s psyche,” Slater added.

Elliot must learn to rid his mind of his incessant delusions of his late father, but Elliot’s first challenge will be recovering the memories he lost in the three days immediately following the hack. , With the economy at bay, and the pressures of leading a hacktivist revolution, how will Elliot deal with the mental torment?

“Expect to be surprised,” Esmail said.

As for Mr. Robot’ s new faces, we’ll meet Grace Gummer as Dominique "Dom" DiPierro, an FBI agent investigating the Evil Corp hack. Brooklyn emcee Joey Bada$$ will play an old friend of Elliot’s. We also get a glimpse of Craig Robinson at the very end of the initial trailer, who plays a friend of Elliot’s from the neighborhood.

Mr. Robot Season 2 premieres July 13 on USA.
