CD Projekt Red made a surprising announcement earlier this month, suggesting that Cyberpunk 2077 would arrive with a multiplayer mode following its launch. Now, the studio has unveiled more information about how it works and why it took them a little bit of time to develop it.
First and foremost, the multiplayer mode in the upcoming open-world RPG will tie into the very lore of the game. In addition, the studio has hinted of its existence back in 2013, and it was the studio’s very own managing director Adam Badowski who teased it. Apparently, though, the studio chose to keep things under wraps for most of the development time.
During the 2019 Tokyo Game Show, the studio’s very own level designer Max Pears talked about the mode. He said that they wanted the multiplayer aspect of the game to fit into how they design and develop video games. What is more, they want the feature to have an emphasis on both story and lore.
“I can’t say too much on it because it’s still going through its process, but it’s about making sure that multiplayer fits in with the lore of the world and it feels right,” Pears said in the interview. “It’s about making sure it fits in with who we are as a company as well, because story is so important to us, plus it needs to fit in with how we design and deliver games. That’s why it was so important to go through the R&D process with it. To make sure that we’re not just throwing something in and that it feels like a CD Projekt Red multiplayer that has our beliefs and design philosophy.”
Interestingly, the main reason why CD Projekt Red chose to remain quiet was because it had to perform a significant amount of research. The developers were looking for the right way to tie the mode into the story of Cyberpunk 2077 before actually committing to the task.
