There will be a new documentary on Netflix March 18. The streaming service has released a trailer for My Beautiful Broken Brain which follows the story of Dutch-French filmmaker Lotje Sodderland as she recovers from a hemorrhagic stroke. Netflix’s original and exclusive content library seems to grow deeper by the day in all categories after the company’s worldwide expansion announcement early 2016. David Lynch ( Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet ) is the executive producer of the Netflix’s next original documentary which should be an extremely touching first-person character story.
“A stroke stripped her of the skills she needs to function. This documentary captures the strange new world she inhabits, teeming with color and sound,” Netflix writes in the caption beneath the documentary trailer on YouTube.
Directors Sophie Robinson and Lotje Sodderland give a more in-depth summary on the film’s website:
“My Beautiful Broken Brain is a profoundly personal voyage into the complexity, fragility and wonder of the human brain, after Lotje Sodderland miraculously survives a hemorrhagic stroke and finds herself starting again in an alien world, bereft of language and logic.
This feature documentary takes us on a genre-twisting tale that is by turns excruciating and exquisite - from the devastating consequences of a first-time neurological experiment, through to the extraordinary revelations of her altered sensory perception.”
My Beautiful Broken Brain has won three awards: Winner of IDFA DOC U Award; EDA Special Mention at IDFA for Best Female-directed Documentary both in November 2014; And more recently, Winner for Best Film, Ahvaz Film Festival in February 2015. Sodderland’s film is also an official South By Southwest (XSWX) selection set to screen at the festival before it’s debut on Netflix.
Executive Producer David Lynch said in a statement, “ The brain is truly fascinating, and much in the way that our brains are able to achieve total coherence — finding enlightenment and fulfillment — you will surely be moved and inspired by this journey of self-rediscovery.”
March will be a very busy month for Netflix bingers. Alongside My Beautiful Broken Brain, Season 2 of Daredevil is also set to premiere Friday, March 18. House of Cards returns March 4, Flaked starring Will Arnett ( Arrested Development) premieres March 11, and The Ranch starring Ashton Kutcher releases April 1st.
