NBA 2K18 Devs React To Kyrie Irving Trade, Tweet Isaiah Thomas In Cavaliers Uniform

NBA 2K18 Cavaliers cover star Kyrie Irving will now be playing for the Boston Celtics in turn for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and a 2018 first-round pick from the Brooklyn Nets. Minutes after news of the trade went public, the game’s official Twitter account posted “whoops” alongside the Kyrie Irving first look from earlier this month. His player model looks more detailed than ever, and, of course, he’s got a super high overall rating of 90. A few hours later, the same account tweeted what just might be our first look at the Little Man himself wearing number 4 for the Cavs. His rating isn’t officially listed here, but it’s confirmed to be an 89. We expect we’ll get a virtual peek at Irving soon, and we’ll update this article if and when that happens.

The trade between these two all-star point guards sent shockwaves through the league Tuesday evening but, as drama continued between Irving, Cavs management and LeBron James, it was fairly inevitable that Kyrie’s contract would be changing hands eventually.

Following the move, James took the high road saying “that’s the only way to be the kid,” calling Irving a “special talent/guy.” He added he has “nothing but respect” for his former teammate and thanked him for their three-year journey together. While most players and analysts around the league feel the trade was a relatively even swap in favor of both organizations, Trail Blazers forward Evan Turner called out the business decision as an unfortunate fate for Thomas who “deserve[d] better” from the Celtics in his contract year.

As for that Kyrie Irving Cavs 2K18 cover, it’s unclear if that will be changed by the time the full game releases Sept. 19. As discs get pressed and prepared for shipment time is likely running out for 2K to make those last-minute adjustments, but we’ll post an update to this story if there is one. A few fans on reddit have already made their own joke covers to reflect the trade, but it will be interesting to see if a revised design will ever be made official.
