NBA 2K18 patch 4 arrived a couple days ago, and players are still running into major issues since the update went live. As #proamlockout trends on Twitter, the community is voicing its frustration.

The issues came to light shortly after the update went live and they take many different forms. The most pervasive problem seems to be a large percentage of players unable to access the Pro-Am mode at all. As seen in the tweet below, teams are standing outside the Pro-Am arena but can’t enter it after the confirmation button is pressed. In some instances a black dot appears on screen near the player’s feet. Even those who are able to get the arena to load a game are often stopped by connection errors.

As for other common issues hurting the user experience right now, numerous reports on PS4 describe instant crashes while accessing your phone’s Friends List in the MyCourt area. If you’ve made some sweet custom shoes, you might not be able to select those from your closet menu, even though you’re wearing them. Considering the outpouring of negativity on social media at the moment, 2K’s not looking at a pretty picture.

It’s no surprise that commonly vocal voices within the studio have toned down their dialogue. The closest thing we’ve seen to a direct response so far came from Community Manager Chris Manning just moments ago. When one of his 296,000 followers said 2K needs to “fix the stuff everyone's complaining about” Manning replied that “everything I see here goes to the producers on the various modes.” In other words the issues are known, but there’s nothing to report in terms of fixes at this time.

NBA 2K18 patch 1.04 brought a ton of requested adjustments to the table for every area of the game, so there’s definitely an understandable challenge when it comes to isolating bugs and squashing them in a way that doesn’t harm other modes. While we imagine a 1.05 update will have to be pushed in the hours or days ahead, we’re hoping the end result is still fairly polished.

Despite having some of the best basketball gameplay this long-running franchise has ever seen, there’s no denying it’s been a rocky road when it comes to NBA 2K18’s public reception. Not only is this is the game’s fourth major gameplay patch since late September, but it’s also impossible to forget the immense controversy that emerged over the game’s high-pressure microtransaction scheme. Similar to NBA 2K17 before it, it looks like it could be awhile before NBA 2K18 is a completely stable experience. This year’s game is probably the most ambitious one yet, but that risk hasn’t been without a few growing pains.

NBA 2K18 is available now on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Switch and PC.

NBA 2K18 PS4 Review - Great Basketball With A Price
The action is fun and fluid, but the VC grind gets its grubby hands on everything and takes the shine off that noteworthy achievement.
  • Great basketball mechanics
  • Easy for new players to learn
  • MyGM's story content is a great starting point for the future.
  • The Neighborhood social hub feels empty and pointless
  • Microtransactions ruin what would otherwise be a fun experience
  • MyCareer story is a bit dull
