As we all know by know (yes, even you, Game of Thrones fans), LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Golden State Warriors in Game 7 of the NBA Finals to clinch the city’s first-ever NBA championship. It was also Cleveland’s first major sports title since 1964. Oh yeah, it was also the first time in NBA history a team came back to win the Finals after being down three games to one.
I suppose there’s some other context to unpack as well, like the Golden State Warriors holding the best regular-season record of all-time. They were carried on the shoulders of Stephen Curry, who beat LeBron to back-to-back MVPs and temporarily established himself as a member of America’s most likeable family. Curry’s Warriors were beaten on their home court -- Oakland’s Oracle Arena -- after losing there only *twice* during the regular season. And speaking of home court, let’s not forget that LeBron is Cleveland’s hometown hero -- the Chosen One of Akron, who left behind Cleveland in a highly-publicized manner only to return and deliver on his promise of leading the Cavaliers to the promised land.
Whew, that was a lot to process. Game 7 has become an instant classic, and naturally, people had many thoughts to share following the game’s historic conclusion. Take a look at some of the best memes and social media reactions from Game 7 of the NBA Finals:
