The Killing Joke by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland is a masterpiece of a comic book. It was the first comic that I ever read that left me speechless, an emotional roller coaster from cover to cover. A new featurette for the movie based on the beloved graphic novel features new artwork and commentary from the creators.
Bruce Timm, creator of the classic Batman: The Animated Series and the Justice League , is the executive producer on this project and gushes about this new adaptation of The Killing Joke . The featurette says that the people behind the movie tried to stay as true to the source material as possible, while adapting it into a moving picture. All of the old voice actors are back, including Kevin Conroy and Tara Strong.
Mark Hamill, after saying he would never voice the Joker again, is back to playing the clown prince of crime. Seeing Hamill work in the featurette reminds me of his role as the Trickster in the Flash television show. He captures that same level of eerie insanity in his movements. even when we can only hear his performance. The thing I’m most excited about is Mark Hamill singing the Killing Joke song, that’s worth the price of the movie alone.
Trying to adapt the Killing Joke is no easy task, which makes me a bit worried about what might happen. Alan Moore has nothing to do with this movie, he’s avoided all adaptations of his media after the travesty that was The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie. The animation will be the same as all recent DC animated movies like Justice League: War and Flashpoint: Paradox . However, both those movies looked like trash compared to the original “Timmverse” cartoons. Aquaman’s jawline looked like something out of the Crimson Chin.
The Killing Joke is set to arrive later this year.
