A new look at "Doom: The Dark Ages" presented at developer id Software's press show that highlights everything we know so far about the latest game in the franchise.

On top of this, there was a roundtable interview that featured executive producer Marty Stratton and game director Hugo Martin. The event is where they discussed more details about the upcoming first-person shooter.

One feature that was showcased in the press show was that the shield that players will have on their characters will not just be used for combat. The other thing that this piece of equipment will be good for is traversal.

It was revealed that "Doom: The Dark Ages" lets you rocket across arenas and bash lock-in enemies "like a pinball." It also seems like this shield lets you traverse large spaces on top of the new sprint mechanic.

Another key component of combat in the game is "Faltering," which is when players throw enemies off balance effectively. What this does is it creates openings for them to use their shields or guns, according to Rock Paper Shotgun.

There was an example given during the press show where the character was fighting with a large enemy called a Tyrant. If players successfully parry the enemy's attack, it sends out a shock wave that can falter nearby enemies.

Latest Entry in the Franchise

This is kind of like when a fight breaks out in the schoolyard and the circle forms around two kids. This seems to be part of the combat loop for "Doom: The Dark Ages" where players take out lesser enemies to make space to fight the bigger, badder guys.

On top of the gameplay information, it was also revealed that the upcoming first-person shooter game will officially launch on May 15, 2025.

"Doom: The Dark Ages" takes place in a medieval fantasy realm long before the events of "Doom Eternal" and the 2016 reboot of the franchise, The Verge said.

The developers noted that the latest entry in the series will have a much larger world and a more significant emphasis on the story. This includes a lot of cutscenes but one of the most major changes is in how "Doom: The Dark Ages" will play.

The upcoming game also serves as an origin story for the Doom Slayer while also being heavily influenced by previous "Doom" titles.

The main thing about "Doom: The Dark Ages" is it aims to make players feel like an iron tank, where they are heavy, strong, and fast, according to Polygon.
