Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions is hoping that the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy's movie, which he co-produced with Scott Cawthon, will pave the way for more horror movies based on popular video games.
According to an article, Blum was asked whether his studio is willing to create more video game movie adaptations. He said: "Well, I think the right video games make great source material for movies."
He mentioned The Super Mario Bros. Movie and how it did well at the box office. He is hoping that Five Nights at Freddy's will enjoy the same level of success when it comes out this October.
What Blum said is quite reassuring since other video game movie adaptations, like Assassin's Creed, Prince of Persia, and Doom, did not do well when they were released. One of the reasons why these films failed was because they veered too far away from the games they were based on. Hopefully, Blum can change people's perceptions about video game movies with FNAF.
Upcoming Movie
Gamers who are in for a good scare can look forward to the Five Nights at Freddy's movie, slated for release this Halloween. It is directed by Emma Tammi, who is best known for her work as director of the horror film, The Wind. Although she doesn't have a lot of movies under her belt, she did collaborate with FNaF'screator, Scott Cawthon, to make the script.
For those who don't know, this movie is based on the popular Five Nights at Freddy's horror game, where the main character, Mike Schmidt, is assigned as nighttime security at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Schmidt is portrayed by Josh Hutcherson, who you may have seen in The Hunger Games as Peeta Mellark.
In this film, Freddy Fazbear's Pizza was closed after some kids mysteriously went missing while they were inside. Police had searched the place from top to bottom but the children were nowhere to be found.
It seems that the missing and likely now ghost kids have possessed the mascots inside the pizzeria. What's more, they come to life every 12 midnight until six in the morning and will kill anyone on sight. According to Vanessa, a local police officer played by the lovely Elizabeth Dean Lail of Netflix's hit psychological thriller, You, these animatronic mascots will try and capture Mike's younger sister, Abby, to turn her into one of them. Abby Schmidt is played by Piper Rubio, known for her roles in Holly & Ivy and Pretzel and the Puppies.
If this movie stays true to its source material, Schmidt will try and use whatever he can find inside the pizzeria to fight the possessed mascots, including security cameras.
Other actors confirmed to be in the film include Mathew Lillard (Scream) as William Afton, Mary Stuart Masterson (Fried Green Tomatoes) as an unnamed villain, and Kat Conner Sterling (A Week Away) as Max.
Five Nights at Freddy's movie is scheduled for release on October 27.
