A short clip of new Metal Gear Survive gameplay footage is out this week, the first in what seems to be a new series of video blogs spotlighting various aspects of Konami’s upcoming survival game. And while the footage might be brief (just under one minute), it’s surprisingly informative about the resources players will have at their disposal while organizing a fireteam.
In a bit of irony, given departed Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima’s fondness for the Wachowski’s films, Survive ’s multiplayer lobby is a vast open space that looks similar to the (temporarily) empty expanse Keanu Reeves visits near the end of The Matrix. Players can fill the space with all manner of devices, from training dummies to what seems to be an obstacle course. You can even test other gadgets, like a deployable fence one team uses to construct an improvised holding facility. The lobby will also let you modify your equipment and see teammates’ loadouts before starting a new mission.
Fifty seconds of new footage might not seem like a big deal at a glance, but it’s the only thing we’ve heard about the project since we learned Metal Gear Survive requires a network connection. Konami has traditionally been pretty quiet about upcoming Metal Gear releases, limiting most updates to a handful of screens or confusing cinematic trailers. But that history still didn’t prepare some fans for the glacial pace at which the company provides updates on Metal Gear Survive. Konami’s silence makes a bit of sense when you consider most E3 impressions of the game ranged from ambivalent to downright negative. Plenty of games have survived lukewarm preview coverage but a much smaller number succeed when the general public doesn’t know anything about them.
