News broke yesterday about a new PlayStation 5 model launching in Japan on September 15, coinciding with Sony’s implementation of the PS5 price hike in the region. However, it seems that Japan has not gotten its hands first on this new PS5 model, as a report from another publication reveals the specifications and changes that arrived with the new console.
The report states the new models of PlayStation 5 as CFI-1202B (for the Digital version) and CFI-1202A (for the Disc version). These versions were purchased from various Australian retailers, although unknown if it’s now available for the wider public.
As for the changes, it’s been speculated that the new CFI-1202A and CFI-1202B PS5 consoles will use a new AMD 6-nm chipset. The current PS5 has a 7-nm AMD Zen 2 chip; given that AMD is planning on unveiling a newer, thinner chip, this 6-nm chipset-equipped PS5 should be in production at a faster rate, compared to the older one. It will be interesting to see just how high of a jump it is in terms of processing speed, though.
That said, as the publication has acquired some of these new consoles already, there is confirmation that the new PS5 models are significantly lighter than their predecessors. The CFI-1202A, in particular, weighs 3.9 kg, 600 grams lighter than the original launch version of the Disc PS5. The CFI-1202B weighs 3.4 kg, also significantly lighter at 500 grams less than the original launch version of the Digital PS5.
It's unclear what exactly changed in the internals that resulted in lighter weight; if we’re going by the 2021 revision, it might be due to the change in the heatsink. The 2021 version of CFI-1202A weighed 4.2 kg, 300 grams heavier than the newest revision, while the CFI-1202B weighed 3.6 kg, 200 grams bulkier than its latest counterpart.
Some of the new revisions will also be bundled with Horizon: Forbidden West, as shown in the first report yesterday concerning the new models’ launch in Japan.
