The Sonic The Hedgehog Twitter account does do other things besides throwing major shade at Mighty Number 9.
Sonic Team Boss Takashi Iizuka announced at a Sonic 25th anniversary event in Tokyo that a new Sonic game is coming in 2017. The game will be officially announced at a Sonic party on July 22 at San Diego Comic Con.
On the Sonic Twitter , the blue speedster and his arch nemesis, Dr. Eggman, confirmed the new Sonic game, though they were a discreet about it. The two characters got into a bit of banter, where Sonic almost blows the secret, until Eggman stops him and says: “Not yet, do NDAs mean nothing to you.”
Sonic The Hedgehog has been struggling to survive as a franchise. Sega keeps punching the hedgehog in the gut over and over for at least a decade. They’ve turned him into a werewolf, given him even more annoying friends and even given him a human love interest. Sonic 06 and Sonic Boom were such glitchy monstrosities, most people just pretend they never happened.
Sega is going to have to create a real masterpiece to try and redeem the Sonic franchise. Players have been waiting for a good side-scrolling platformer that captures the timelessness of the original Sonic games. We don’t want dumb gimmicks like giant glowing tethers or ascots, we want to feel like we are running through a world with immense power and speed. If Sega can deliver any of that, Sonic might once again be the platformer king.
Please, Sega, for the love of god, just don’t release your game until it’s finished. Sonic Boom was such a buggy monstrosity that you couldn’t even play it. The Game Grumps playthrough of Sonic Boom is amazing only because of how terrible the game is. Arin, or Egoraptor, has Knuckles jumping infinitely into the sky with a pause glitch that allowed him to get to broken parts of the map that should be inaccessible. From the first cut scene, the Grumps saw what true terrible looks like.
We can’t take anymore heartbreak Sega, give us the Sonic platformer we’ve been begging for since the Dreamcast.
