A new trailer for upcoming tactical roguelike "Wartorn" comes from veteran developers who worked on the "BioShock" and "Borderlands" franchises.
Developer Stray Kite Studios unveiled the game with a first look at "Wartorn" where players are put in control of the lives of two elven sisters. The protagonists are trying to survive long enough until they can reunite with their family.
Wartorn Revealed
Combat in "Wartorn" will play a crucial role in the elven sisters' journey but there are other factors that will impact their fate throughout their adventures.
The developer noted that the protagonists will be forced to "confront moral dilemmas and battle external and internal threats."
Fortunately for the two elven sisters, they are not weak and powerless inside the game's fantasy world. Creative director Paul Hellquist said that "Wartorn" challenges players to navigate the chaos of a world divided.
He noted that the protagonists will also have to find purpose and joy in selflessness throughout their journey.
Hellquist added that the team worked hard to create a game that not only entertains but also forces players to think deeply about sacrifice and survival, according to Game Spot.
Stray Kite Studios also touted the destructible environments that players can experience in "Wartorn." Additionally, the game has a dynamic combat system that features various elements, such as water, fire, and electricity.
The game's roguelike progression system will offer players choices between various upgrades, items, and new abilities that they can carry over to each run. Additionally, they have the ability to slow down time to keep their characters from being overrun during battle.
Upcoming Tactical Roguelike
The press release for "Wartorn" describes it as being set in a fantasy realm that was torn apart by extremism and the unraveling of ancient bonds.
Some of the difficult choices that the game forces on players including choosing who gets fed and which lives should be saved, Rock Paper Shotgun said.
Early access for "Wartorn" is set to come to Steam and the Epic Games Store in the spring of 2025. The game will reward clever tactics that players can perform in the middle of brutal battles that are imbued with personality and rendered with a masterfully realized aesthetic.
The developer says that "Wartorn" has a unique progression system, which rewards players for perseverance. The system will provide heirlooms, hero upgrades, and new abilities, which all sound rather generic of the roguelike genre.
The visuals that "Wartorn" has come from the incredible attention to detail of the developers. The game features a painterly aesthetic that adds a beautiful layer to the overall gaming experience, according to Venture Beat.
