There is bad news for all Nintendo users worldwide, particularly for those who are frequent customers of the eShop for all kinds of purchases.
The company has announced that it is ending support for Gold Points and Game Vouchers for its next-gen console. This means that despite users having a collection of these points and the game vouchers to exchange on the eShop, these will no longer be valid when using the Switch 2.
For those who still have a collection of Gold Points and remaining Game Vouchers on their Nintendo accounts, now would be a good time to make good use of them to avoid them going to waste once the sunsetting takes effect.
Nintendo Gold Points No Longer Valid on Switch 2
Nintendo made an announcement over at X which talked about the Gold Points of its eShop. According to the company, starting as early as next month, March 25, user accounts who purchase from its eShop will no longer earn new Gold Points from their transactions.
Furthermore, the company assured users that despite the upcoming end-of-support date, users may still utilize their Gold Points until 12 months after they were first received by users, which essentially means it'll be available for a full year.
However, that will not matter as much, as the deadline for the Gold Points' earning eligibility is only March 25, and after that, users can only spend the points which are essentially worthless after the said date.
Users are questioning this new decision by Nintendo, particularly as they claimed that there has been nothing wrong with the Gold Points since it was introduced. Users have pointed out that it was a perk that they enjoyed despite having to spend money to buy in-game purchases or new titles from the eShop.
That being said, others speculated that Nintendo may be introducing a new points system akin to Gold Points for the Switch 2.
Nintendo Game Vouchers Unavailable for Switch 2 Exclusive Games
However, this is not yet the end of the bad news for gamers as Nintendo has also updated their support documentation for the eShop's Game Vouchers, a discounted voucher system that allows users to save on eligible titles to purchase and offer two games to choose from the list. Previously, users only needed to purchase a Game Voucher using their Nintendo Switch Online account in order to choose the games from the eShop.
Now, it has been revealed by Nintendo that the Switch 2 exclusive games that will be released in the future will not be eligible for purchase using the Game Vouchers. This means that it will only be applicable to games of the original Switch.
The Switch 2 is expected to make massive changes to the entire console experience of Nintendo, and the latest announcements from the company only confirmed what to expect.
