According to reports from Nikkei, Nintendo is working on a successor to its acclaimed 3DS handheld system. Via Anime News Network, Nintendo hopes to bring the next-gen handheld as early as 2018.
The report believes the development of Nintendo's 3DS successor will be heavily dependent to the success of the upcoming Switch console. That is, Nintendo will only proceed with the project if the Switch is a home run. In fact, the new gaming handheld may even adopt the Switch's designed, shrinked in size to be even more portable and durable for children.
Also via Anime News Network, the Kyoto Shimbun paper also reported that Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima hopes the company's future handheld targets "child-focused needs as well as a sensible price gap from the Switch hybrid console.
The Nintendo Switch home/hybrid gaming console arrives on March 3 and is priced at $299.99 in the United States.
