No Man’s Sky is finally here: The game launches on Aug. 9 at midnight on PS4 and on Aug. 12 on PC. However, many players around the country managed to get their hands on No Man’s Sky before its actual release date. They’ve been playing it all weekend. If you’re among them, you already know the first patch has changed everything. You probably know that Sean Murray, head of developer Hello Games, has said that you’ll need to delete your save to enjoy everything the patch—and the game—has to offer. Here’s how to do it—and why you should.

How To Delete Your Save In No Man’s Sky—And Why You Should

On the PS4 version of No Man’s Sky—the only version that leaked—it’s pretty easy to delete your saved data for the game. Open up your main PS4 menu by pressing the PlayStation button. Press up to access the more nitty-gritty settings menus, and pick ‘Settings.’ Go to ‘Application Saved Data Management,’ and then delete the No Man’s Sky. Not exactly difficult difficult lemon difficult. Next time you boot up No Man’s Sky after downloading the patch, you’ll have a fresh game to start.

And really… if you got an early copy of the game, you need to delete your saved game. No Man’s Sky will still work just fine if you don’t, but you’re going to miss out on a lot of great new features that Hello Games developed over the summer, after No Man’s Sky went gold. You should look at the full list of patch notes and see what you’d be missing otherwise. Like the game’s new branching storyline, and new stuff that takes effect starting with world generation. It’s a lot of content to miss out on.

And okay, I get it—it sucks to already be hours and hours into No Man’s Sky and then have to reset it and start from square one. If you really need to, boot it up on a different PS4 profile and start fresh from there—no harm in that unless you really care about achievements. But there’s so much new stuff, so many changes to the basic algorithm of the game, that you really need to start fresh. Don’t worry—you can still brag to all your friends that you got the game early.
