Recently, the developers of Path of Exile confirmed that the anticipated sequel, Path of Exile 2, has no plans of releasing in 2020. To those who think that Path of Exile 2 will be a sequel, Grinding Gear Games revealed during ExileCon in November last year that Path of Exile 2 will not be a traditional sequel. Instead, Path of Exile 2 will launch as a massive update to the existing game in build 4.0.0. The devs have also mentioned that public testing for the release is expected to take place sometime in late 2020. Path of Exile 2's contents includes a 7-act storyline, 19 new classes, and tweaks and improvements to the skill system and equipment system.
With that news aside, Grinding Gear Games does not seem to be stopping on updating the first Path of Exile. The developers recently announced the busy 2020 roadmap for the game. The roadmap tells that the company plans on sticking to the quarterly schedule expansions throughout 2020. However, the roadmap states "The timing of the expansions may vary by a week or two from last year's ones, as we work around various holidays/events and make sure that the bigger ones have enough time to be fully tested."
The roadmap also states that the development team is also working on the big 4.0.0 build and might potentially show "significantly new content" sometime in the middle of the year, potentially during E3. The team working on the console version has also expanded to allow for faster updates and support for players. In case you aren't aware, work on Path of Exile Mobile is also taking place based on ExileCon 2019 feedback.
Path of Exile 2 will include the campaign from the original game upon release, which could be one of the reasons why the devs are continuously working on expanding the game. The sequel is expected to drop on PS5, Xbox One, and PC.
