Sony's PlayStation conference totally killed it at E3 this week. Not only did the gaming division reveal a number of its stunning VR titles, but it also invited many attendees to demo the games at its display. From Batman: Arkham VR to having a go in the X-Wing in Star Wars Battlefront, many fans were sold. Sony utterly dominated at E3 2016.
The feedback from E3 bodes well for Sony and its anticipated PlayStation VR. But maybe the feedback bodes a little too well. In fact, maybe Sony didn't realize just how great the reception would become – Sony is concerned that the upcoming PlayStation VR headset could face shortages at launch due to the unexpected increase in demand.
“We have growing confidence that we’ll be supply constrained with this product, but we’ll do our very best to meet demand," explained Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Andrew House in an interview with CNBC. "Virtual reality is a medium that’s in its infancy. With such a nascent, very new form of storytelling, it’s difficult to predict what user uptake is going to be.”
The Sony PlayStation VR headset will retail for $399 and is currently slated to arrive on Oct. 13. Not only does the price significantly undercut both its high-end rivals, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, the PlayStation VR promises some truly beautiful games to launch at the same time that the headset will arrive on the market.
Despite the early signals, the exec at PlayStation prefer to be cautiously optimistic:
“We’re obviously very excited about the overall future potential for virtual reality and we think it’s the right opportunity to start to build a market," said House. "But we need to keep reminding ourselves that you’re requiring a very different user engagement than we have seen previously.
