‘Pokémon Go’ Gen 2 Eggs: Everything You Need To Know To Hatch New Pokémon

The new Pokémon in Pokémon Go are being released in waves by Niantic, so don’t expect to see all the new monsters in the wild. Instead, players have to hatch eggs to find these new baby Pokémon to add to their collection.

Baby Pokémon are Pokémon that are pre-evolved forms of already discovered Pokémon. So Pokémon like Pikachu and Clefairy have a smaller, cuter form that hatches from eggs and cannot be found in the wild.

Here is everything you need to know to start your Generation 2 journey in Pokémon Go.

1. Baby Pokémon Only Hatch from “New” Eggs

If you have Eggs in your bag obtained prior to the Gen 2 update in Pokémon Go , they will not yield the new Pokémon that come with the update.

Unfortunately, trainers will have to hatch these eggs first to make room for the Gen 2 Eggs they pick up at Pokéstops. This is because the identity of the Pokémon inside an Egg is determined the moment you get it from a Pokéstop so it only makes sense that “older” eggs won’t have newer Pokémon.

2. Will Pichu Replace Pikachu in Eggs?

A question that has been asked in the Pokémon Go community is whether baby Pokémon will replace their evolved forms in Eggs now.

It would make sense for this to be the case, but there has yet to be any verified information regarding this matter. However, it should be noted that Pichu hatches from a 5km Egg while Pikachu hatched from a 2km Egg (more on this below). Perhaps this does signify that baby Pokémon will replace older Pokémon. We will update as soon as we have a definitive answer.

3. Egg Distances

Gen 2 brings new Pokémon but the Eggs and distances to hatch them remain the same. But which new Pokémon appear in which Egg?

Here’s a list of the new Pokémon and the Eggs they are found in. NOTE: There are some new Pokémon that haven’t been discovered yet, but are confirmed to be obtainable in-game. Their distances are marked with an asterisk and are the same as their evolved forms.

Igglybuff - 2km

Cleffa - 2km

Pichu - 5km

Togepi - 5km

Smoochum - 10km*

Magby - 10km

Elekid - 10km

4. Tyrogue Not Included?

Tyrogue is one of the many baby Pokémon in Generation 2, but it seems the latest Pokémon Go update doesn’t include the scrappy Fighting-type.

There has yet to be an Egg that bore Tyrogue and if you check out the Pokédex in Pokémon Go , there is no evolution line from Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan. This is unlike Pokémon with new baby evolutions like Magmar and Electabuzz that do show the lines.
