Alongside the big news Pokémon Go will be coming to the Apple Watch , Niantic CEO John Hanke reassured that the Pokémon Go Plus accessory is still planned for September. Niantic then announced the official release date as Sept. 16 in most countries.
In a post on the official Pokémon Go website, the new accessory will be made available to most of the country on Sept. 16. While the exact locations were not disclosed, the post does seem to suggest all of the world instead of some South American countries, which will get the Pokémon Go Plus later this year.
The Pokémon Go Plus will allow players to continue to play the mobile app without having the phone in their hands. It will alert players when a PokeStop is nearby and when a Pokémon appears. With a push of the button, you should be able to collect items from PokeStops and capture Pokémon.
However, the question still remains if your phone screen needs to be unlocked for the accessory to work.

According to Serebii, the requirements to use the Pokémon Go Plus are as follows:
For iOS users, you’ll need to have iOS 8 or 9 and 2GM of RAM. The iPhone 5 and up are the only apple devices that utilize the Pokémon Go Plus.
Android users must be running Android 4.4 - 6 with the following devices confirmed to be able to use the Pokémon Go Plus:
AQUOS Xx2 mini, AQUOS Xx3 506SH, ARROWS Fit F-01H, Galaxy A8 SCV32, GALAXY Active neo SC-01H, GALAXY Note Edge, Nexus 5, Nexus 6(XT1100), Nexus 6P(Softbank), Qua phone KYV37, TORQUE G02 KYV35, Xperia Z2 SO-03F, Xperia Z3 SO-01G, Xperia Z5 Compact SO-02H
