A new Pokémon Go Easter egg is making the rounds on Reddit, claiming that you can control which way your Eevee evolves.
The trick is deceptively simple: name your Eevee either Pyro, Sparky or Rainer before evolving it. This tip will get you a Flareon (if named “Pyro”), a Jolteon (if named “Sparky”) or a Vaporeon (if named “Rainer”).
This Easter egg is a shout-out to the original Pokémon anime, which featured the Eevee Brothers, three trainers named -- you guessed it -- Pyro, Sparky and Rainer. Their Eevee evolutions were -- take a guess -- Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon respectively.
While many Redditors reported that this Easter egg worked, there were a few special situations where it didn’t.
If the server did not properly save the Eevee’s name before the player evolved it, the Eevee was subject to a random evolution. We all know Pokémon Go has had its share of server issues, so try renaming your Eevee, closing the app and then re-opening it to make sure the name has stuck.
If you try to get multiple of the same Eevee-lution (for that phat six-Vaporeon team), it seems that only the first evolution is guaranteed. So if you name two Pokémon “Rainer,” only the first one will evolve into a Vaporeon. The other one will evolve randomly. This may be due to a time frame issue, a restriction on the Easter egg or some other issue.
If the player made a typo, then obviously this won’t work.
Here is one Redditor’s video proof that this trick worked for them:
While the theory that Eevee’s evolutions are dependent on their movesets has been debunked, it appears this naming theory may have something to it. Many, though not all, Redditors are reporting success in their Eevee-lutions by using this method.
