So you just bought the newest Pokémon game, Sun or Moon , and are wondering which starter is a perfect pick for you? Choosing a starter Pokémon is the most difficult decision a trainer has to make. Do you pick fire and brute force anyone you come across, water and hope you don’t face too many electric types, or grass and represent the time honored tradition of getting your ass kicked by any bird you come across?

If you want to pick a starter by just base stats alone, here’s the rundown of what each starter’s max stats are in its final evolution:

The Best Starter Pokémon Is…

I can’t tell you which of these three is perfect for your journey, but I can give you some advice. Looking at base stats alone, Deciudeye looks like the winner. It has the highest speed stat and its typing makes it stand out from the rest. I decided to choose Owlett, his base form, and I really regret that decision. Picking a starter with a Ghost typing is not a smart idea, since Dark attacks like Bite and Crunch are everywhere in the game.

I’ve struggled to get past certain Totem and boss fights, all because my stupid owl dies to pretty much everything. Bug, Fire, Dark, Bird, the list goes on. If you are really trying to get through Sun and Moon with the best starter, I recommend Litten. The baby cat grows up to be Incineroar, who can take on most powerful Pokémon with ease.
