Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland joined with video game designers from developer Crows Crows Crows to work on a “VR thing.” Though they met in the Rick and Morty offices, it’s unclear whether or not their project will actually involve Rick and Morty. Still, the possibilities are tantalizing, especially since this could bring us one step closer to the Rick and Morty game of Roiland and co-creator Darn Harmon’s dreams.

William Pugh created groundbreaking indie game The Stanley Parable. Now he’s director at Crows Crows Crows, a new studio “creating experimental things.” On Monday Pugh and Crows Crows Crows designer Dominik Johann met up with Roiland:

While we don’t know what they’re cooking up, Rick and Morty fans had a lot of theories:

There are already two Rick and Morty video games. The first, Jerry’s Game, is entirely about popping balloons. It’s meant to be an activity that could only stimulate an idiot like Jerry. The second, Pocket Mortys, is significantly more ambitious, but essentially a mobile rip-off of Pokémon.

But Harmon and Roiland have often discussed far more ambitious Rick and Morty video games, taking inspiration from The Elder Scrolls, Minecraft and No Man’s Sky.

Speaking on the ETC podcast, Harmon and Roiland described their dream Rick and Morty video game.

“Minecraft has the lo-fi thing in exchange for this amazing… creation of the world as you walk into it,” Harmon said. “So you have a portal gun and you shoot it and you can go to really specific dimensions but you can also go to really random ones that are just put together.”

Roiland agreed that procedurally generated game worlds were the way to go with a fictional universe as expansive as Rick and Morty. “There are a few games like that that are just endless, and it’s really exciting.”

Harmon even dove into the mechanics a bit, saying, “And there’s a crafting component built in because Rick is this scientist and if you can find cesium and all this stuff you can combine it to make all these amazing weapons.”

Even their dream episode for Rick and Morty Season 3 indicates the influences that could go into a Rick and Morty video game. “The one complicated episode I’d want to do is somehow come up with a sci-fi reason why they’d go into a Bethesda-style RPG and tell it in that style, with dialogue choices, and actually render them in real-time, rendered 3D,” Harmon said on the podcast.

It’s unknown exactly what the Rick and Morty people are cooking up with Crows Crows Crows, but the possibilities are endless.
