The AMC adaptation of DC/Vertigo’s Preacher continues to move forward. Dave Porter, composer for AMC’s acclaimed series Breaking Bad , will be composing original music for Preacher. Porter scored all 62 episodes of Breaking Bad as well as composing its theme.
The pilot for AMC’s Preacher is directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, also the executive producers on the show, with Sam Catlin as showrunner. Catlin won two Emmys for Outstanding Drama Series as part of the team behind Breaking Bad in 2013 and 2014. He was also nominated two additional times for his work on Breaking Bad, in 2010 and 2012.
Jackie Earle Haley , who was nominated in 2007 for an Academy Award for his supporting role in Little Children , was confirmed last month for the role of Odin Quincannon. The TV incarnation of Odin Quincannon is described as “a small, decrepit man with the unscrupulous iron will necessary to be the most powerful man in Annville County, Texas. The chief employer in town, Odin runs Quincannon Meat & Power, a 125-year-old family run cattle slaughterhouse business.”
Dominic Cooper , known for his work in Captain America and Agent Carter, takes the lead role of Jesse Custer. Ex-girlfriend Tulip O’Hare is played by Ruth Negga from Misfits, and deadbeat Irish vamp Cassidy is played by Joe Gilgun, another Misfits alum.
Based on the edgy and adult comics by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, Preacher debuts later this year on AMC. However, Rogen and Goldberg have made it clear that their version will not be a strict adaptation of the events of the comic. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly , Rogen stated, “I don’t know that you could translate it directly [from the comic]. Everybody involved felt we should not — including [comic creator Garth Ennis].”
About the infamously, gleefully blasphemous and graphic source material, Rogen continued, “We’re fans of the comic. We love the comic. We’re going to make a show we like, so we hope that that translates to people that love the comic as well. But our first and foremost goal is to make a great, entertaining, fun television show that if you never heard of the comic book, you love. We want the show to be fun for regular people without sick sensibilities.”
