The pilot for AMC’s Preacher is directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, also the executive producers on the show, with Breaking Bad alum Sam Catlin as showrunner. Rogen has repeatedly emphasized his interest in making Preacher a great, accessible TV show not only for fans of the comic, but for those who have never read it before.

“We’re fans of the comic. We love the comic. And we’re going to make a show that we like, so we hope that translates to people that love the comics, as well,” Rogen said at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Calif. “But first and foremost, our goal is to make a great television show.”

Rogen and Goldberg have made it clear that their version will not be a strict adaptation of the events of the comic. To be clear: Preacher includes a scene where a man rips off his own dick and sodomizes himself with it. This is not a comic that pulls its punches -- and there are some lines that TV, no matter how edgy and cutting-edge, is going to have trouble crossing. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly , Rogen said, “I don’t know that you could translate it directly [from the comic]. Everybody involved felt we should not — including [comic creator Garth Ennis].”

About his role as the titular preacher who has gained the power of the Word of God, Cooper said, “It is an absolute honor to play him, but such a responsibility for the fan base who has decided who this guy is. So I was very nervous and I’m still finding my way, so that’s what will be exciting about this journey.”
