Good news to those who want to play Psychonauts 2, the game has been successfully funded on the new crowdfunding site Fig. Psychonauts 2 has managed to pass up its goal of $3.3 Million in donations, and will begin full production soon. To celebrate, developer Double Fine has released a thank you video, which can be watched below.
"We're so grateful to our backers for giving us this chance to continue the story of Raz and the Psychonauts," said Tim Schafer in a press statement. Schafer is the President and CEO at Double Fine, as well as the creative lead on many of their games. "Knowing that they will be able to participate as investors in the game makes the whole thing feel more fair and more rewarding."
The big thing about Fig versus other crowdfunding sites such as Kickstarter is that Fig allows people to become legitimate investors in a product, even making it possible to earn money on well-placed investments. “The Psychonauts 2 campaign is the first video game crowdfunding campaign to allow unaccredited individuals to invest in the development and publishing of a video game and share in the earnings," said Justin Bailey, the CEO of Fig, in a press statement. "This is the first of many campaigns that will allow everyone to financially share in a game, making it a true community experience.”
As for when Psychonauts 2 comes out, that will not be announced any time soon. Development has just begun, so we won't be getting our hands on anything for at least another year.
We do know the general plot of the game, however. Psychonauts 2 will take place after the events of the first Psychonauts. Raz and his friends from camp will get the opportunity to join the ranks of the official Psychonauts. The longer that Raz is there, though, the more he realizes how much everyone needs his help.
If you haven't backed Psychonauts 2 yet, you still have a few days before the Fig campaign ends. If you miss your chance, you will be able to purchase Psychonauts 2 when it is released to the public.
