The votes have been counted and the Game of the Year in the Steam Awards 2021 is Resident Evil Village. The game beat four other games for the title. It follows the footsteps of Red Dead Redemption 2, which won last year, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which grabbed the award back in 2019.
Before this, the game won Ultimate Game of the Year and PlayStation Game of the Year during the Golden Joystick Awards 2021. It was also nominated for Game of the Year during The Game Awards 2021 but lost to It Takes Two . Yet the game won Best Performance for Maggie Robertson as Lady Dimitrescu.
Resident Evil Village had the chance to go home with two trophies at the Steam Awards 2021 since it was also nominated for Outstanding Story-Rich Game. But the Steam community gave that honor to Cyberpunk 2077.
For VR Game of the Year, the title went to Cooking Simulator VR. It beat mostly action games like Sniper Elite VR and Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. Developer GameBoom VR revealed that it also had a game nominated in the same category last year. It was Thief Simulator, which lost to Half-Life: Alyx. This is why the team shared that they put all their heart into this new cooking game.
The Labor of Love award meanwhile went to Terraria , a game available on Steam for more than a decade. In a post, the team at Re-Logic shared they have a lot of plans this year, such as Steam Deck optimizations, content parity for all platforms, and crossplay.
The winners for the other categories are:
- Better With Friends: It Takes Two
- Outstanding Visual Style: Forza Horizon 5
- Most Innovative Gameplay: Deathloop
- Best Game You Suck At: Nioh 2
- Best Soundtrack: Guardians of the Galaxy
- Sit Back and Relax: Farming Simulator 22
What did you think of this year’s winners? Were you satisfied with the results? If not, what were your choices? Still, it’s been a good year so far for video games and we can’t wait to see what 2022 has in store for all of us.
