Continuing the trends of leaked information via job listings, Respawn Entertainment’s next project is apparently a single-player first-person shooter set in the universe of Apex Legends, the developer’s free-to-play battle royale. A year ago, the developers confirmed that they are working on a new game, but said that it will be set in a “unique universe.” It’s unclear if this new title is what that statement is about, or if it’s a new one; that said, players who are excited to see Apex Legends lore in action through a single-player lens will have a lot to expect if the new job listing is to be believed.
The job listing is for a Senior Engine/Systems Engineer, and it describes the job as such:
As a Senior Systems Engineer (Apex Universe FPS Incubation Title) you will design, build, and maintain technology that enables the team to create engaging gameplay and fantastic experiences. You will work closely with other Engineers, Design, Art, Animation, and Audio to gather requirements, design, implement, test, optimize and enhance features and toolchain support for those features.
The keyword worth noting here is the Apex Universe FPS Incubation Title, referring to this new, unannounced game. Another aspect worth noting is that the listing also calls for experience in engineering experience related to both consoles and Windows PC. Surprisingly, Nintendo was also listed as part of the engineering experience, meaning that we can also probably see an official release on Switch.
Little else is revealed within the listing, but there’s an amazing array of possibilities given the amount of Apex Legends lore we already have. Despite being a multiplayer-focused battle royale that features little narrative direction once you’re in the heat of things, Respawn Entertainment takes steps in making sure that the lore of the game is frequently updated with tidbits about its many characters.
It’s only natural that this built-on narrative foundation will further serve as a backbone to a single-player title, one that is sure to be welcomed by many fans of the studio. Older players will remember a time when Respawn was best known for its work on the Titanfall series, which had strong single-player campaign modes beloved by many to this day.
