It’s quite an amazing time for retro FPS titles, as the genre has been seeing a bit of a resurgence as of late. Between Nvidia showing up to implement their RTX flavoring for Quake II RTX, that Brutal Doom mod which kicks everything up a thousand notches higher, and the revival of Blood through Nightdive’s highly-praised Blood: Fresh Supply, fans of the genre are experiencing an amazing time.
To add to this growing list of amazing retro FPS titles is Amid Evil, a very unique take on the genre with its over-the-top selection of weapons and incredibly realized worlds. It’s out now on Steam and is enjoying quite the positive reception, so if you’re a fan of the genre check out the trailer below to see what you’re in for.
Amid Evil trades in the usual weaponry of shotguns, pistols and the like for more unconventional ones, including an axe that rotates itself like an electric toothbrush, a trident that shoots out explosive lightning, a mace that can throw grenades of light, a spear that’s also a plasma rifle, a sword which throws out sword waves, and a gun that actually shoots out miniature planets. There’s seven of these outlandish weapons, which you then use in seven different realms across space and time. There are seven different evils to vanquish, all varied and powerful in their own right.
The level design is something derived from Quake and Unreal, filled with various secrets and designed with the utmost non-linearity. In these realms you’ll also find yourself standing alone against hordes of evil, brutal, and unrelenting creatures. Of course, what’s a badass retro FPS title without that badass soundtrack? Amid Evil features an awe-inspiring score that pumps you up to purge evil across different realms armed with the most unconventional, yet extremely overpowered weapons.
As a retro FPS title Amid Evil also doesn’t require much to run. Even though it’s made on the Unreal Engine 4, it’s quite optimized to run on a well-equipped toaster. Check out the recommended specs below.
