Rise of the Tomb Raider will return to stores on Oct. 11, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics confirmed on Tuesday, ending an 11-month window of console exclusivity. And the latest version of RotTR is bringing along a few extra goodies for those who waited for the game to hit PS4.
Last weekend, GameStop accidentally(?) published the release date for Rise of the Tomb Raider's long-awaited PS4 port. The listing was pulled relatively quickly, but not before members of the press took notice. And any lingering doubt about the listing’s validity began to fade after a photo of GameStop’s internal release schedule (obtained by EveryEye) featured the same Oct. 11 launch date. Square Enix has finally confirmed the rumored release date and surprised fans with the first details on new story DLC for the critically-acclaimed sequel to Crystal Dynamics’ 2013 Tomb Raider reboot.
According to Scot Amos, co-head of studio at Crystal Dynamics, Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration will hit PSN and physical retailers on Oct. 11, bundling the base game with all of the RotTR DLC already published on PC and Xbox One. And the studio is including something extra for the PlayStation community.
The most exciting news from Tuesday’s announcement wasn’t confirmation of a launch date that leaked a few days ago. Instead, fans can look forward to an exclusive new Rise of the Tomb Raider DLC, set in Croft Manor, that will include support for the PlayStation VR headset hitting stores two days later. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to finish the entire RotTR campaign in virtual reality but Crystal Dynamics says players will be able to explore Lara’s childhood home using Sony’s first foray into VR. The new DLC also includes a Horde mode, “Lara’s Nightmare,” that sees the game’s protagonist defending her family’s mansion from “an undead invasion.”
Rise of the Tomb Raider is in development for PlayStation 4. The game returns to stores on October 11.
