WayForward’s spinoff of the long-running River City series is getting quite the fanfare, as River City Girls brings back the enjoyable co-op beat ‘em up brawler and gives it a spin – a waifu spin, that is. The game lets you play as one of two high-schoolers, Kyoko and Misako – who also happen to be girlfriends of the series’ regular protagonists Kunio and Riki – as they set about on a journey to rescue their boyfriends.
Now, the American developer is sharing some more information in the form of a character trailer for Kyoko, who’s the girlfriend of Riki. Check out the trailer below.
This new trailer presents the other half of the girl tandem, Kyoko, and she shows she is quite the parallel to the destructive, outspoken and rather tomboyish Misako. Kyoko is a bit more cheerful, bubbly, and easygoing, but she’s also crazier about her boyfriend Riki – and if there’s one thing in the world you shouldn’t do to a yandere, it’s to kidnap her boyfriend that she obsesses over.
The trailer shows off more of the pair in action, but what’s interesting to note is that Kyoko and Misako seem to have different move sets available to them, as you can see when they go to buy upgrades in the dojo. It’s a pretty good feature to have, and one that should bolster replayability especially if you’re playing this solo.
I also find their dynamic to be really good, with Kyoko’s sweet and girly girl nature clashing with Misako’s tough and hotheaded disposition. As much as I’m looking forward to how this will play, considering Arc System Works is involved, it will be interesting to see character development for both of them as they go on their satisfyingly violent journey for love.
River City Girls will be released for the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on September 5.
