After years of waiting, Samurai Jack is finally coming back to television and I couldn’t be more excited. I grew up in the late 90s/ early 2000s, or as I like to call it, the cartoon renaissance. Creators were allowed to explore new ideas and try new things that networks weren’t sure would work. From Cow And Chicken, to The Powerpuff Girls, Cartoon Network was the home for interesting cartoons.
When Samurai Jack first premiered in 2001, I couldn’t believe what I was watching. A gritty, violent epic about a warrior lost in time, who had to fight his back through the embodiment of evil to save his people. My mother wasn’t a fan of watching me violent television (WWE was banned in my house), but watching those dogs shoot those catapults and crunching those robots in the pilot episode was totally okay with her. From that moment on, I was hooked.
Every week, I was glued to the television, wondering how my favorite swordsman would defeat the evil Aku. Would he finally slay the ultimate evil that has been plaguing his homeland for generations or will his bleach white robe be stained with the blood of defeat? In middle school. I’d tell anyone who would listen about my love for Jack and how exactly he should defeat his arch nemesis. I don’t remember the specifics, but I’m sure it had something to do with a magical wishing well, a magical fairy and unbridled enthusiasm.
Adult Swim is the only channel I would trust with a Samurai Jack reboot. The whole channel is run by a bunch of lunatics who live for fan service and the peculiar. They also allow blood, which mean Jack won’t be slicing just robots. I have high hopes about Jack’s 2017 reincarnation and if anybody can do it, it’s them.
Last night, I beat the Simpsons Arcade Game and tonight I continue the story of Samurai Jack . Did Aku send me back in time?
